Utilising off-peak renewable energy for horticulture
A full ADOPT grant project funded by Innovate UK

The Problem
In 2025 the UK spent an estimated £500 million curtailing wind turbines because the grid couldn’t distribute the excess power. Meanwhile, UK growers face high energy costs.
Our Solution
We are trialling industrial Demand-Side Response (DSR). This channels surplus renewable energy into greenhouses to power lighting systems, boosting food production during winter.
The Goal
To create a blueprint that lowers investment barriers, boosts UK food security and provides a path to Net Zero.
Improving the UK’s food security through efficient energy distribution
The Green Light Project is an initiative dedicated to improving food security in the UK. Supporting UK-grown goods strengthens resilience, reduces reliance on imports, supports rural economies, and helps lower environmental impacts linked to long supply chains.
